A magnificent spectacle of stars, scenery and choreography, this version of Verdi's Aïda is remastered from Sam Wanamaker's landmark production. It features monumental performances by Luciano Pavarotti as Radames and Margaret Price in the title role. The tensions which arise from Radames' love for Aida, a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro, and the jealousy this provokes in the daughter in Amneris, daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most famous music. The Best of Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (9 or 10 October 1813 -- 27 January 1901) Verdi is considered, together with Richard Wagner, the preeminent opera composer of the nineteenth century. Verdi dominated the Italian opera scene after the eras of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture, as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, the "Coro di zingari" (Anvil Chorus) from Il trovatore and the "Grand March" from Aida. Moved by the death of compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi wrote Messa da Requiem in 1874 in Manzoni's honour, a work now regarded as a masterpiece of the oratorio tradition and a testimony to his capacity outside the field of opera. Visionary and politically engaged, he remains -- alongside Garibaldi and Cavour -- an emblematic figure of the reunification process of the Italian peninsula (the Risorgimento). Verdi died in 1901, leaving behind some of the most admired operas of all time. His operas remain the most frequently performed in the world today. Nabucco (Italian pronunciation: [naˈbukko]; short for Nabucodonosor [naˌbukoˈdɔːnozor]~[naˌbukodonoˈzɔr], English Nebuchadnezzar) is an Italian-language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The libretto is based on biblical stories from the Book of Jeremiah and the Book of Daniel and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue, although Antonio Cortese's ballet adaptation of the play (with its necessary simplifications), given at La Scala in 1836, was a more important source for Solera than the play itself.[1] Under its original name of Nabucodonosor, the opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842. Nabucco is the opera which is considered to have permanently established Verdi's reputation as a composer. He commented that "this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star".[2] It follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar II). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. The best-known number from the opera is the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves", Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate / "Fly, thought, on golden wings", a chorus which is regularly given an encore in many opera houses when performed today. The fabled "Lisbon Traviata" with Alfredo Kraus (Alfredo), and Mario Sereni (Giorgio), conducted by Franco Ghione, live performance, March 27, 1958. (In 1958 in January there was her also famous walk-out at the Rome Opera...) São Carlos de Lisboa... all was swept aside by the go-for-broke intensity of Callas' Violetta. In the midst of all that mediocrity was this vivid portrayal of the brave, angry, feverish Violetta created by Callas. Listen to the letter scene (1:40:13) and "Addio del passato", also the "Alfredo, Alfredo" (1:26:49) using floating pianissimi... tearfull pianissimi... It's like conducting the orchestra herself. ------------------------------------- Act 1 The salon in Violetta's house (4:15). Violetta throws a lavish party at her Paris salon to celebrate her recovery from an illness. Alfredo agrees to sing a drinking song (Libiamo ne' lieti calici, 09:34). From the next room, the sound of the orchestra is heard and the guests move there to dance. Alfredo enters and expresses his concern for her fragile health, later declaring his love for her (Un dì, felice, eterea, 15:07). After the guests leave, Violetta wonders if Alfredo could actually be the one in her life (Ah, fors'è lui, 21:52). But she concludes that she needs freedom to live her life (Sempre libera, 27:32)... Act 2 Violetta's country house outside Paris (31:40). Three months later, Alfredo and Violetta are living together (Alfredo: De' miei bollenti spiriti, 33:36). Alfredo's father, Giorgio, demands that she break off her relationship with his son for the sake of his family, since he reveals that Violetta's relationship with Alfredo has threatened his daughter's engagement (Pura siccome un angelo, 40:22) because of Violetta's reputation. With growing remorse, she finally agrees (Dite alla giovine sì bella e pura, 47:42). As she is writing a farewell letter to Alfredo, he enters. She can barely control her sadness and tears (Amami, Alfredo, 57:43). Giorgio returns and attempts to comfort his son (Di Provenza il mar, 1:03:56), but Alfredo rushes out... Party at Flora's house (1:08:56). Flora calls for the entertainers to perform for the guests (Chorus: Noi siamo zingarelle, 1:10:04; Di Madride noi siam mattadori, 1:12:54). Violetta arrives with Baron Douphol. As everyone is leaving the room, Violetta has asked Alfredo to see her. Alfredo misunderstands her apprehension and demands that she admit that she loves the Baron. In grief, she makes that admission and, furiously, Alfredo calls the guests to witness what he has to say (Questa donna conoscete?, 1:22:49). She faints onto the floor. Giorgio enters the hall (Di sprezzo degno sè stesso rende, 1:24:49). Violetta turns to Alfredo (Alfredo, Alfredo...1:26:49). Act 3 Violetta's bedroom (1:31:28). Violetta will not live long since her tuberculosis has worsened. Alone in her room, she reads a letter from Alfredo's father (Teneste la promessa, 1:40:12), but she senses it is too late (Addio, del passato, 1:42:11). The lovers are reunited and Alfredo suggests that they leave Paris (Parigi, o cara, noi lasceremo, 1:47:48). She knows her time is up (Gran Dio!...morir sì giovane, 1:53:52). A moment later, she dies in Alfredo's arms. ------------------------------------- Maria Callas - Amami, Alfredo! FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/classicalmelodieshq/ Link Libretto : https://mega.nz/#!ygpQVAzJ!l3EMvzbNipfUd9Xw1-UUktEwFFmM92rrbCa5ND1Vs90 Don Carlos[1] is a five-act grand opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi to a French-language libretto by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle, based on the dramatic play Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien (Don Carlos, Infante of Spain) by Friedrich Schiller. The opera is usually performed in Italian. In addition, it has been noted by David Kimball that the Fontainebleau scene and auto da fé "were the most substantial of several incidents borrowed from a contemporary play on Philip II by Eugène Cormon".[2] The opera's story is based on conflicts in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias (1545–1568). Though he was betrothed to Elisabeth of Valois, part of the peace treaty ending the Italian War of 1551–1559 between the Houses of Habsburg and Valois demanded that she be married instead to his father Philip II of Spain. It was commissioned and produced by the Théâtre Impérial de l'Opéra (Paris Opera) and given its premiere at the Salle Le Peletier on 11 March 1867. When performed in one of its several Italian versions, the opera is generally called Don Carlo. The first Italian version given in Italy was in Bologna in March 1867. Revised again by Verdi, it was given in Naples in November/December 1872. Finally, two other versions were prepared: the first was seen in Milan in January 1884 (in which the four acts were based on some original French text which was then translated). That is now known as the "Milan version", while the second—also sanctioned by the composer—became the "Modena version" and was presented in that city in December 1886. It restored the "Fontainebleau" first act to the Milan four-act version. Over the following twenty years, cuts and additions were made to the opera, resulting in a number of versions being available to directors and conductors. No other Verdi opera exists in so many versions. At its full length (including the ballet and the cuts made before the first performance), it contains close to four hours of music and is Verdi's longest opera. FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/classicalmelodieshq/ Link libretto : https://mega.nz/#!ixhTmRKa!9k-UbV3jnI9nI6CnV4EqH1GQBeJYVudCC7FAOPu2ceU Aida (Italian: [aˈiːda]) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in Egypt, it was commissioned by and first performed at Cairo's Khedivial Opera House on 24 December 1871; Giovanni Bottesini conducted after Verdi himself withdrew. Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world; at New York's Metropolitan Opera alone, Aida has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886. Ghislanzoni's scheme follows a scenario often attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, but Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz argues that the source is actually Temistocle Solera.(Wikipedia)

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (Italian pronunciation: [dʒuˈzɛppe ˈverdi]; 10 October 1813 -- 27 January 1901) was an Italian Romantic composer, mainly of opera. He was one of the most influential composers of the 19th century. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture -- such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata and the "Grand March" from Aida. Verdi's masterworks dominate the standard opera repertoire a century and a half after their composition.

00:00:01 Act I 00:49:42 Act II 01:19:00Act III Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi with text by Antonio Somma. However, Somma's libretto was itself based on the five act libretto which playwright Eugène Scribe had written for Daniel Auber's 1833 opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué. Scribe wrote about the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav III of Sweden who was killed as the result of a political conspiracy against him. He was shot while attending a masked ballroom dance and died 13 days later of his wounds. It was to take over two years between the time of the commission from Naples and planned for a production there and its premiere performance at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on 17 February 1859. In order to become the Un ballo in maschera which we know today, Verdi's opera (and his libretto) was forced to undergo a significant series of transformations and title changes. Based on the Scribe libretto and begun as Gustavo III set in Sweden, it became Una vendetta in dominò set in Germany, and finally Un ballo, set not in Sweden but in Boston, Massachusetts during the colonial era. These changes were caused by a combination of censorship regulations in both Naples and Rome, as well as by the political situation in France in January 1858. It became one of the most frustrating experiences of Verdi's career.
